Aspire Capacidad - North East and Iquitos
RCE North East is working in Partnership with a voluntary organisation
'The Peru Mission', Newcastle University Sports Development Team,
SUNNE and schools across the North East to develop an
intercultural exchange programme involving young people
from the North East of England and Iquitos in the Amazon
Rain Forest. Youth in that part of the world (another 'North East')
are faced with many issues familiar to those of our own region.
We intend to raise the capacity of people from both places
through transformative learning which involves sport and dance.
We look forward to receiving a visit from our own
RCE North East Peruvian youth football team and dancers
from the Rain Forest in the late summer next year.
Through this we will raise awareness of the concerns and
aspirations of both communities.
The young people with whom the Peru Mission works are from very
poor backgrounds: most of their parents earn around 7 Peruvian
soles per day, (£1.60) as fishermen, moto-taxi drivers,
solderers and carpenters. The mothers generally work in the
market, selling the fish which their husbands catch.
The Peru Mission works in humanitarian projects along the
River Amazon and its tributaries, the River Nanay and the
River Momón. One of the core milestones of the exchange
project will be the building of a Centre of Formation for
young people, where we can deliver talks and
workshops, accommodate pupils and students coming to visit
for extended periods, and provide a base for the project work.
