RCE global network

North East Centre for Transformative Education and Research (NECTER) is the coordinating body for RCE North East, a network of individuals and institutions recognised by the United Nations University as a Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) in Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD). It is part of a United Nations initiative to promote EfSD in a growing global network. Its aim is to celebrate the best in formal and non-formal education in the North East of England, with a focus on transformative education: education for, through and about change. We facilitate collaboration between existing projects, institutions and individuals and encourage the development of new projects for the benefit of people of all ages across the region. Full details of our objects can be found in our newly established constitution. Anyone interested in the work of the RCE is encouraged to come along to one of our events and get in touch with us:

Debtocracy
For the first time in Greece, a documentary produced by the audience. Debtocracy seeks the causes of the Greek debt crisis and proposes solutions sidelined by the government and the dominant media. Aris Chatzistefanou and Katerina Kitidi discuss with economists, journalists and intellectuals from all over the world, who describe the steps that led Greece to the current debt trap –to debtocracy. The documentary follows the course of countries like Ecuador, which created Audit Commissions, and tracks the similar process in Greece.

Following the film we will have a discussion with our special guest, Prof Mary Mellor. Mary's current research focuses on the financial crisis, money systems and financial exclusion. Her research interests include the social economy and alternative economics; co-operatives and other alternative economic structures; ecofeminist political economy, ecological political economy and feminist economics; ecologically sustainable and social just ‘sufficiency’ economics.
